Open Instagram, Pinterest or Houzz while planning a remodel, and it does not take long before inspiration starts to feel like instruction.
Suddenly, one color appears everywhere. A certain countertop feels essential. Every kitchen seems to have the same island. Every bathroom uses the same finish.
Home design trends can be useful. They introduce new materials, smarter layouts and ideas you may not have considered.
But there is a difference between understanding what is changing in home design and allowing what is popular to make decisions for your home.
At Excell, our approach to remodeling is simple:
We track trends. We don’t obey them. The house comes first.
Home design trends are useful. They’re just not rules.
The best design trends often begin with a real need.
A new storage solution can make a kitchen more practical. A different layout can improve how a family moves through a space. A new material can provide the look you want with less maintenance.
Those are good reasons to pay attention.
Popularity alone is not.
A feature can look incredible in hundreds of photos and still be wrong for your kitchen, your routine or your home. Another idea may receive far less attention online and still make your home much better to live in every day.
And that distinction matters.
The remodel will still be there long after the post that inspired it disappears from your feed.
Use design trends as information, not as a rulebook.
Your home has a longer life than the trend cycle
Most homeowners are not remodeling for a few months of relevance.
The 2026 U.S. Houzz & Home Study found that 61% of homeowners expect to remain in their homes for 11 years or longer after renovating, while 44% describe the property as their “forever home.”
That makes long-term functionality more important than short-term popularity.
Instead of asking only:
“Is this trending?”
A more useful question is:
“Will this still work for the way we live?”
Think about the years ahead.
How many mornings will begin in that kitchen? How often will family and friends gather in that living space? How much time will you spend cleaning and maintaining the finishes you are choosing today?
A successful remodel should feel exciting when it is finished.
But it also needs to keep working well after the excitement of something new wears off.
Function and durability matter as much as aesthetics
Beauty matters in a remodel. But appearance is only one part of a good design decision.
The 2025 Remodeling Impact Report, from the National Association of REALTORS® and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, found that 28% of consumers considered better functionality and livability the most important result of a remodeling project.
Another 23% prioritized durable, long-lasting results, materials and appliances — the same percentage that selected beauty and aesthetics.
Bathroom research shows a similar pattern.
In the NKBA 2026 Bath Trends Report, 91% of respondents said durability and practicality that minimize upkeep are the top considerations when selecting bathroom flooring.
So before choosing a feature simply because it appears everywhere, ask:
- Does it work for the way we actually use the room?
- Are we comfortable with the maintenance it requires?
- Does it solve a real problem?
- Does the material make sense for our lifestyle?
- Would we still choose it if we stopped seeing it online?
A remodel needs to do more than look good in photos.
It needs to work well in real life.
Timeless design doesn’t mean ignoring what’s current
Choosing for the long term does not mean your home needs to be neutral, predictable or disconnected from current design.
Quite the opposite.
New design trends can bring personality, better materials, smarter technology and fresh ways to use familiar spaces.
The goal is not to avoid what is current. It is to understand why you are choosing it.
In the NKBA 2026 Bath Trends Report, 70% of industry professionals surveyed identified transitional/timeless design as a strong trend for the next three years.
That finding signals an important direction observed by industry professionals rather than a preference measured directly among homeowners.
And that still leaves plenty of room to be bold.
Choose the distinctive tile. Bring in color. Use the finish you genuinely love. Create spaces with personality.
Just make sure the decision belongs to you and your home, not to the trend cycle.
Southwest Florida remodeling requires another layer of consideration
For homeowners planning a remodel in Southwest Florida, there is another reason the house needs to come before the inspiration image.
The property itself may have requirements that affect the project.
Depending on the home’s location and the scope of the renovation, permits, floodplain requirements and the Florida Building Code can influence what can be done and how the work needs to be completed.
The Florida Building Code, 8th Edition (2023), became effective December 31, 2023.
In unincorporated Lee County, development within Special Flood Hazard Areas requires a local permit. Certain renovations may also be subject to substantial improvement requirements and flood-compliance standards.
For properties located in applicable flood zones, Lee County’s substantial improvement rules can become especially relevant when the cost of the proposed work equals or exceeds 50% of the market value of the structure before construction.
That does not mean every design conversation needs to become a conversation about codes and regulations.
It simply means good design never happens in a vacuum.
A beautiful idea can come from Instagram, a design magazine, a hotel, a neighbor’s kitchen or a home in another state.
But the final decision has to work here — in Southwest Florida, in your home and for the way you live.
The best trend is one you would still choose without the algorithm
When something keeps appearing in your feed, try a simple test.
Imagine it disappears tomorrow.
No Pinterest boards. No designers calling it a must-have. No Instagram videos telling you it is the next big thing.
Would you still want it?
If the answer is yes because it makes the room work better, fits your lifestyle or simply feels right for your home, then there is nothing wrong with it being a trend.
It may be exactly the right choice.
What matters most is that the decision is yours.
The algorithm introduced the idea.
It did not make the decision.
At Excell, we track design trends because our clients deserve to understand what is new in the market. We study materials, layouts, technologies and design directions. We pay attention to what is changing and why.
But when it is time to decide, the home, the people living in it and the years ahead matter more than what happens to be popular this month.
We track trends. We don’t obey them. The house comes first.
